Medicine and Public Health Dual Degree - MD/MPH

The MD/MPH dual degree allows UTMB medical students to complete the MPH within the 4-years of medical school. Advantages of completing the MD/MPH in 4-years include the following:

  • Time: Eliminates additional one-year of study (to step out during 3rd & 4th year). Due to shared credits between the School of Medicine and Graduate School, there are only 30 additional hours (as opposed to 42-hours for the traditional MPH).
  • Cost: Cost for MPH only includes tuition (fees are only paid once through SOM).
  • Residency Match: Students may match better in some competitive residencies.
  • Opportunities to Explore Interests: Caters to interests in research, global health, underserved populations, infectious disease, social determinants of health, and health care services and systems.

The UTMB MPH graduates in the Generalist track are expected to master the following competencies:

  1. Differentiate the organization, financing, and delivery of health services and public health systems in the United States
  2. Apply evaluation methods and quality measurement, assurance and improvement concepts to address organizational performance
  3. Assess the roles of cultural, social, and behavioral factors influencing health outcomes
  4. Integrate information and resources to make evidence-informed decisions for patients and populations
  5. Select public health and social services resources to address health-related needs in populations and individuals

This form requires demographic information, public health experience, and a personal statement that describes your interest in public health and how the MPH fits into your career goals. The Admissions Committee for the program looks at this information along with the TMDSAS application to make their admissions decisions.
